Snowbird unease
Why is this happening?
The problem started with the second election of Donald Trump. Almost immediately he started attacking Canada, its economy, Canadian values and sovereignty, not to mention imposing ridiculous high tarriffs on Canadian goods. This actually upended a Canadian election in April 2025 where a former shoo-in to win, suddenly lost to someone that a large number of Canadians perceived as more able to stand up to Trump. This was the largest flip in Canadian political history.
Canadians have responded by boycotting US products and boycotting trips into the US, both daily and long term as Snowbirds.
Why are Canadians upset
Canadians have always considered Americans as brothers and have enjoyed having a country below us that respects the rule of law and Democracy. When Trump was elected and started his rhetoric against us, we strongly resented it.
We have acted as a northern buffer for the US for decades, we had close military ties through Norad. We took nearly all flights on 911, and treated stranded US passengers like royalty. We rescued US hostages from Iran during the revolution there. We allowed the US to use our vast northern territory to develop US cruise missiles. We installed anti ballistic missile facilites during the cold war to shoot down any incoming Russian missiles before they could hit US cities. The sudden reversal in attitude towards us by the Trump regime hurt us considerably. Most Canadians have good friends in the US, but most of us dislike the current US government and its threats to take us over and harm, or destroy, our economy. This situation has raised Canadian patriotism to levels not seen in decades
The quandry for snowbirds?
It is no secret that Canada is cold in winter. The motivation to get into the warmth and sun is a strong one, and I cannot blame anyone for wanting to go south. The current drop in those willing to spend tourism dollars in the US, is going to harm the US economy, especially in Florida and the SW, and put pressure on them to lay off the anti Canada rhetoric. Couple that with Canada deciding to wean itself off US dependence, by diversifying trade, etc., and the US, in the long term, will probably come out the loser.
Many Snowbirds are struggling with not wanting to support the US economy and at the same time get somewhere warm. This can cause those who do go south to face the potential disapproval of friends, and possibly make them feel guilty, and create all sorts of excuses why they should go. Some do not care and go anyway. Their choice. I see this in Snowbird Facebook groups all the time.
THe mexican alternative
Mexico offers an alternative. It is true that to get an RV to Mexico, you have to transit the US. New US regulations have made it more difficult, but that is also the case for those still choosing to Snowbird in the US. However, most can easily transit the US in less than a week, and in an RV you can minimize spending there, by using places like Walmarts overnight. Mexico has more RV parks than you think, and is a cheaper alternative for the most part.
Why choose mexico
Mexico actually has more reliable weather than the US in winter. It has wonderful culture, and its govenrment is friendly to Canada. Yes there are some dangers, but if you are not involved in drugs, it is probably safer than the US
IWho are we?
We are a Mexican-Canadian RV Caravan company operating winter trips of varying lengths all over Mexico in both English and French. We do have some competitors, but they are American owned and as far as we know not 100% legal (with a business license) in Mexico.
A caravan is the best way to explore Mexico for the first time. You will learn how to handle the paperwork, where you can drive safely, and you will likely find a spot you wish to return to, either in an RV or by flying and renting.
